The Recurrent Anterior Dislocating Shoulder

Prognosis

Outcome of anterior shoulder dislocations is dependent on:

  • The extent of damage done to the shoulder and surrounding structures e.g. Bankart lesion, torn ligaments, muscle tear etc.
  • Accurate selection of treatment
  • Time taken to get appropriate treatment such hospital reduction (putting back into place)
  • Patient motivation and adherence to rehabilitation program

With these key factors addressed, patients can expect a low incidence of complications, good shoulder range of movement and stable repairs with a low incidince of recurrence. Full return to previous level of function is often achieved within 3-4 months (Brukner and Kahn, 2007)
